Disaster and Disease

The MCHD provides a wide range of services dealing with disaster and disease, Rabies investigations being one of the most widely known.  On average, the MCHD investigate approximately 200 animal encounters each year, with half of those requiring samples for Rabies testing.  Monongalia County has been Endemic with Rabies since the early 1990’s and always had a pro-active approach with this program.

We also, conduct West Nile Virus investigations.  People become infected from the bite of certain kinds of mosquitoes that are infected with the virus.  Mosquitoes get it when they bite, or take a blood meal, from birds infected with the virus.  The mosquitoes then transmit the virus to people and other animals when biting to take blood. The public should contact the MCHD with sightings dead birds. WNV cases occur primarily in the late summer or early autumn. 

Other areas of this program include, All Hazards Planning, Tattoo/Body Piercing Studio inspections, Vector Control complaints, assistance on Radon, Asbestos, Lead, Indoor air Quality and the enforcement of Monongalia County Clean Indoor Air Ordinance.
